VODAFONE Fiji yesterday signed a new four-year sponsorship deal worth $4million with the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) at their headquarters in Tamavua.

Shailendra Prasad, Vodafone head of ecommerce and corporate affairs said this was an increase from the previous agreement and that FNRL would be allocated $1m per year (for four years) leading up to the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

"We have increased the sponsorship by 35 per cent over the previous sponsorship. Cash is $1 million dollars a year for total of four years, that is $4million dollars and we are delighted to support the development of the sport in the country," he said.

Timoci Naleba, the FNRL chief executive officer, said the sponsorship would cover four major sectors of their sport.

"Vodafone have sponsored four major properties that are the primary schools, secondary, club competition and the Vodafone Fiji Bati side," he said.

Naleba thanked Vodafone for their continued support which he believes has made a difference.

"It is important to state our sincere gratitude towards Vodafone Fiji. Having supporting rugby league you have seen changes in the lives of young people, these changes are bringing economic viabilities to some families especially those who have played at NRL level," Naleba said.

"Vodafone has contributed a lot towards the development of youths. Our vision is to make rugby league a choice sport, rugby league only not to become number one, but a choice sport for our youths.

"Basically we have been in three consecutive world cups and that's speaks of the potential rugby league has to win a world title."

Prasad said with their backing they hoped to see the sports achieve greater things in the future.

"This is another milestone achievement for FNRL and Vodafone Fiji, we started this sponsorship in 2006 and we had three Rugby League World Cups.

"Fiji has reached the semi-finals, but the last one we managed to beat a tier one nation, New Zealand who were once a RLWC finalist and a winner," Prasad said.

"With our support rugby league has grown, we are delighted to renew our partnership with FNRL.

"There are plans to take this sport to the next level we would love to see the Vodafone Fiji Bati side play in the final in the not too distant future."
