mClimate is Here

Friday 15 December, 2017

The Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation and the Pacific Islands Development Forum organized a soft launch for an interactive platform on climate-related issues in Suva today.

The mClimate platform aims to enable open discourse and information sharing on the realities of climate change.

The Foundation Executive, Ms Ambalika Prakash, was excited about the possibilities of the new platform.

"mClimate will initially be an SMS channel where we will be broadcasting information using the USSD platform," said Prakash. "There's also an interactive two-way platform where people will be sharing their stories on climate-related issues".

Ms Prakash said the Foundation would continue in-person capacity-building training in communities around Fiji.

"A lot of information will be pushed through the channel," said Prakash. "Whatever we share with the grassroots people will be put on this channel and also be available from our mobilise.com.fj portal."

The PIDF Secretary-General, Mr Francois Martel said the new channel would provide valuable information on risks related to health, crop management, and forest fire.

"There are a lot of climate early warning systems that have been set up, but actually, how do you reach the people in the front line of climate change?" asked Martel. "It's really through SMS and the proper utilisation of apps, even farmers, now use phones all the time."

Mr Martel said PIDF was an advocate for climate ambition and also climate urgency.

"When we were approached by the Foundation to partner with them on this new app on mClimate we felt that this was a good opportunity because it's an initiative that actually will have the chance to reach the frontlines of climate change, not only in Fiji but eventually possibly in the Pacific as well."

The new service will be free for all Vodafone Fiji customers, accessible by dialing *679#, and will be linked to the Foundation web portal, mobilise.com.fj.

The portal will have a dedicated tab under mClimate with a diverse range of multimedia information available on raising awareness on climate change, environment preservation, land degradation, ridge to reef, saving our ocean, food security, renewable energy efficiency, coral conservation, useful tips, stories and videos.
