New Champion to be crowned in Vodafone Cup

Wednesday 21 September, 2016

It has finally come to a stage where a new Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) Vodafone Cup champion will be crowned.

This is after the Police Sharks defeated Pacific Energy Kinoya Sea Eagles 26-8 in the first semifinal and Burenitu Cowboys outclassed favourites Sabeto Roosters 9-4 in the second semifinal to reach the final for the first time ever.

The Cowboys, after knocking out the defending champions, will march into the final with high spirits.
And coachSakiusaTikoilau is looking forward to battle Police.

Tikoilau said the team will go back to the white board and also re-look at the semifinal before taking field for the Grand final.

“We want to stick to the open game rugby we used to play but we will mix it with the way we play rugby league,” he said.

“We have four debutants in the premier division as they came from the reserve grade and we are developing them into the main grade.”

While it is also an awesome feeling for the Police Sharks to reach the final for the first time ever, coach SekoveVuniwaqa said a lot needs to be rectified before taking the field on Saturday.
“We will try to rectify on our mistakes. We try to improve on our game plan come the grand final.
“I would like to thank the Lord for giving us the strength which I regard it as our secret weapon.
“Eroni Lima stood out in the wing as he is eyeing a spot in the Fiji Bati and I hope the selectors will have a look at him.”

Vodafone’s Chief Marketing Officer, Rajnesh Prasad wished all the teams participating the best for the finals.  We have been backing the grassroots of rugby league since 2005. Our sponsorship has seen some great display of domestic, national and international matches unfold. Together with FNRL we look towards taking rugby league to greater heights, said Prasad.

The FNRL Vodafone Cup Final kicks off 9am at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this Saturday.
