Vodafone iHost Naibitu

5th September, 2007

The students of Naibitu District School participating in the Tadra Kahani will not miss their parents and supporters in the two-day event - not completely at least.  Thanks to Vodafone’s offer to play host to the school for the two-day meet.  This will see up to 50 Vodafoners (Vodafone staff) acting as hosts for the participating students from Naibitu and taking full care of their welfare during the two-day event.  Naibitu District from the interior of Wainibokasi in Rewa is an entrant in the primary schools category.  Tadra Kahani will be held at the Vodafone Arena on the 12-13 of this month.

When asked how the idea of hosting the school came about, the Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone Fiji, Ms. Avanthi Senaratne had this to say. “When we were approached to sponsor the event, we told the organisers that we really wanted to make a difference in the way we got involved with the event.  It was there that we learnt of the desire of Naibitu District School to participate in the event.  However, financial constraint and lack of resources was proving a major obstacle to their participation.  We decided to do something so that these talented young boys and girls were not in any way deprived of the opportunity to showcase their talents against the more lavish schools from the urban areas.   We wanted to ensure that the remoteness and lack of resources for Naibitu would not hinder their participation in the event.

The plight of the school was communicated to our staff who overwhelming supported the idea of hosting Naibitu for the two days. The concept will see our staff adopt each of the 80 kids from Naibitu playing the role of their parent, mentor and supporter for the two day meet.”

We asked Mr. Bakalevu, the head teacher of Nabitu District School of his students’ response when they heard of Vodafone’s offer to host the school for the two day event. This is what he had to say, “The students were absolutely ecstatic.  Participating in Tadra Kahani has been the dream of the school for the last few years.  We are extremely thankful to Vodafone for coming to our rescue in such difficult economic times.”  We would like to represent the many disadvantaged schools in Fiji who if given the opportunity can also match the best in the country.”

One of Vodafone’s core values is “passion for the world around us”. Through this Vodafone would like to make a positive contribution in lives of the individuals, communities and the environment it operates in. “It is indeed very fulfilling to see our staff bringing to life this global Vodafone value in a local way” , said Ms. Senaratne proudly.

“Our sponsorship of the Tadra Kahani is a realization of the positive contributions the youth can make in shaping the future Fiji we can all be proud of.  Tadra Kahani provides the youth of today a platform to communicate their views and opinions on issues of importance to them.”

Being in the communication business, Vodafone sees its involvement in the Tadra Kahani as complementing iits business of connecting people together albeit being communicated through song and dance rather than a mobile phone.

“We consider ourselves an integral part of the Fiji Community especially when 51% of Vodafone is locally owned by the people of Fiji through the FNPF and ATH investment.  Our sponsorship of the Tadra Kahani is a way of giving something back to the community especially the youth who are the future flag bearers of Fiji”.
