Keleni buys mobile to keep in touch with husband, wins $100,000
14th Februrary, 2007
When Nadera kindergarten teacher Keleni Bola used her savings to buy a $129 Nokia 1110 mobile phone from Courts Homecentres to stay in touch with her husband during the day, she had no idea it would be the purchase of her life.
On Valentines’ Day, the 58-year-old Mum was presented with a cheque for $100,000 by Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Marketing Officer Avanthi Senaratne and Courts Homecentres Managing Director James Datta as the winner of the joint promotion run by the two companies.
Keleni was encouraged by her husband Josefani, who works at CATD Nadave to buy a phone so they could keep in touch as she ran the Viti Community Kindergarten at Nadera during the day.
She says she filled in the competition forms, but had forgotten all about it …until she got a call on Saturday to tell her that she had won the $100,000.
“I was sweeping the house when James Datta came on the line and asked me to come in on Valentines’ Day to collect my cheque,” Keleni said.
The retired primary school teacher says she will invest most of the money for the future, but will also use some of it to help improve her kindergarten at Nadera as well as pay for some of her relatives’ education.
Some of the money will go to her church as well “as without God, I wouldn’t have won this”.
Keleni says she has not been able to part with her phone ever since she bought it.
“ I am thankful for the new technology for enabling me to keep in touch with my husband,” she said.
“ People need to make use of new technologies like a mobile phone as it is vital in today’s world to keep in touch or even use it for emergency and security purposes.”
The $100,000 cash was the main prize in a competition run by Vodafone Fiji and Courts HomeCentres.
Vodafone Fiji Chief Marketing Officer Avanthi Senaratne said the Courts HomeCentres promotion was a successful campaign and were very happy to see someone as deserving as Keleni as the receipints of the main prize since she was going to use it to benefit the kindergarten which she operates.
She congratulated Keleni and thanked everyone for taking part.
