Vodafone puts more cash into rugby league, golf

20 April, 2007

Vodafone Fiji has boosted its sponsorship of rugby league and golf in Fiji by pumping in another $200,000 more into the two sports.

Vodafone Fiji is now giving a total of $500,000 to the Fiji National Rugby League to assist in staging local tourneys and prepare for participation in the Rugby League World Cup next year.

The company had last year announced a $300,000, three-year sponsorship of the Vodafone Fiji Bati and rugby league in Fiji.

Since the sponsorship was announced, rugby league activity has been a major success especially the secondary schools competition which next year will include other districts.

The National Golf Association sponsorship is also increased by $20,000, making it a $320,000 contribution towards NGAF for all upcoming activities this year, especially the Vodafone Fiji Open which was a major success last year.

The additional money will go towards making this year’s Vodafone Fiji Open bigger and to assist in taking the sport to local schools and the holding of clinics for schools.

The sponsorships were announced today in Suva.

Vodafone Chief Executive Aslam Khan said the two sports had received an additional boost because the company had been impressed with the way the national organisations had grown their profiles since the original sponsorships were announced.

Khan said the company had always been behind sport in Fiji and he hoped the additional funds would allow the two sports to hit new highs.

“Those of you who follow sport know it evokes tradition, passion and commitment week in, week out among the players, the community and the fans,” Khan said.

“At Vodafone, our values are very similar to sport – we build our business around a passion for everyone and everything around us and a sense of community and commitment to the community we live in.”

Khan said Vodafone has a global vision “to care for the world around us”.

“Driven by this vision, Vodafone has over the past year sponsored Fiji’s premier community carnival, the Hibiscus Festival, as well as several festivals throughout Fiji,” he said.

“Vodafone Fiji is convinced that the secret to successful commercial activity is largely dependent on its corporate responsibility toward the development of the community in which we operate.”
