Vodafone Fiji gives away $6 million airtime in Double Up
28 July, 2006
Vodafone Fiji expects to give away more than $6 million in airtime this month in its annual Double Up promotion.
And chief executive Aslam Khan reminded customers that they only have a couple of days to take advantage and top up their mobile phones as the Double Up promotion ends on Monday July 31st.
"So if you are a Vodafone Fiji customer and haven't recharged so far, please take advantage and do so in the next few days," Khan said.
The Double Up promotion is an annual giveaway by Vodafone Fiji during July, its birthday month, to reward customers for their loyalty.
Khan said this year Vodafone had initially decided against doing the promotion as the company was in the middle of a move to a new location as well as going through a major $37.4 million network upgrade.
"However the decision to run the promotion for only two weeks was forced upon us by our customers, with thousands calling us this month to ask why the popular Double Up promotion was not being run this year," Khan said. "It was only then we decided to go ahead with the promotion to please our customers."
He apologised to customers if they were affected by the pressure on the network due to the overwhelming response of this year's Double Up promotion.
"Many customers use the extra time they get straight away and this puts temporary pressure on our network especially for a couple of hours during the off-peak period at night," Khan said.
"The pressure eases almost immediately as the month ends and it is thus not possible to build a network to handle a temporary phenomenon.
"Many of our customers, who otherwise may not use their mobile phones regularly, look forward to and use this opportunity to top up their cards and then use the airtime over the course of the year.
"So we are faced with this dilemma. Do we stop giving away $6 million worth of free airtime to our customers to stop the temporary network congestion? I think if you ask this question of our customers, most of them would prefer the free airtime any day."
Khan advised customers to avoid the 7pm to 8.30 pm window if possible for a short period.
He said the whole weekend (Friday 7pm till Monday 7am) is off peak so customers have other times when they can use Vodafone's cheap rates.
"And they can also use what they recharge over the next six months," he said.
