Vodafone backs Fiji Golf

04 July, 2006

Vodafone Fiji has gotten behind golf in Fiji in a big way with a $100,000 sponsorship, starting with this week's 2006 Vodafone Fiji Women's Amateur Golf Open.

The 2006 Vodafone Fiji Women's Amateur Golf Open is the most prestigious event on the Fiji women's golfing calendar.

"We are proud to sponsor this week's 2006 Vodafone Fiji Women's Amateur Golf Open and other tournaments in the next 12 months to help lift golf in Fiji to a new era," Vodafone Fiji acting Chief Marketing Officer, Pradeep Lal said.

"This is the beginning of our association with Fiji golf and we hope this leads to a bigger profile for the sport in Fiji and helps us to perform better on the regional and world stages," Lal said.

"Who knows with this kind of sponsorship, Fiji may yet produce more world class golfers like Vijay Singh."

The President of the Fiji Women's Golf Association, Adi Sai Cokanauto, thanked Vodafone for the sponsorship.

"Without Vodafone Fiji's contribution, this week's tournament will not have been the success we now anticipate it will be," Adi Sai said.

The 2006 Vodafone Fiji Women's Amateur Golf Open, to be played at The Greens of The Pearl resort at Pacific Harbour from this Thursday to Saturday, has attracted 70 entries.

Gye Ohkoh is defending her title and will be challenged by South Pacific Games squad members Sai Natova, Selai Pridgeon and Sala Seniloli.

There is a strong overseas contingent from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Solomon Islands. They include mother and daughter Sylvia and Maxine Joe (both past champions), Debbie Nunn of New South Wales and Vaea Froggia of New Caledonia.
