Vodafone ATH Foundation gives over $1.5 million to charity
14 August, 2006
Two years after it was launched in 2004, the Vodafone ATH Foundation has contributed over $1.5 million towards various charities and disaster relief efforts.
And as the Foundation embarks on its third year in operation, an additional $1.4 million has been set aside for the Foundation's social investments for this financial year which runs from April 1st - March 31st, 2007.
While the Foundation focus is on funding projects which provide access to health care, enhance educational opportunities and environmental projects, all applications received are given due consideration, says Vodafone Manager Corporate Social responsibility, Lenora Qereqeretabua.
"Part of the funding allocated for this financial year has been set aside for an environmental project, River Care, which is working to raise the awareness and care of waterways and rivers through various school and community education activities," Ms Qereqeretabua said.
The project, which is run by environmental NGO Live & Learn and supported by the Ministry of Education has been allocated $314,000 over a three year period.
Other projects identified to benefit from this financial year include, the funding of hygiene facilities for several communities in Wailoku, the funding of a boat and outboard engine to help villagers of Ogea access healthcare in Vanuabalavu and an environmental education project in Rotuma.
Ms Qereqeretabua said the overall objective of the Vodafone Foundation is to make a difference in the lives of communities and people by investing resources, such as profits, staff time and technology back into the people and the environment.
"The Foundation Board meets four times a year to consider applications which are received all year round and we have since been able to assist many worthwhile projects and also make donations to established charities such as the Ba Veilomani Boys Home and the Fiji Society for the Blind," Ms Qereqeretabua said.
"Every effort is made to ensure that each application is given due consideration and it has been very satisfying for the Foundation to assist charities and organizations out in the rural areas," she added.
As part of the efforts to raise extensive awareness on the Foundation, advertisements are also placed in the daily newspapers four times a year. The Foundation is a charitable trust launched under the Vodafone Group Corporate Social Responsibility platform and is guided by the Vodafone Group Social Investment Policy.
Funding for the Foundation comes from annual donations from Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Ltd, Vodafone Fiji Limited and the Vodafone Group Foundation of the UK.
