Vodafone helps golf raise $100,000 for children
08 August, 2006
The Fiji Crippled Children's Society will be $100,000 richer, thanks to the Vodafone Fiji sponsored Christmas in August Charity Golf tournament at Denarau, Nadi at the weekend.
The tournament, which was won by the Premier Pools side, attracted over 140 golfers from Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
The Ambrose event saw former Wallaby great, Glen Ella's Smokeys Bandits team finish second, Smugglers Cove/Mana Island/Ratu Kini's Resorts come third and Island Electric come fourth.
Island Electric also won the Best Dressed prize while the Vodafone Team One won the Most Golf Played prize.
The Premier Pools winning team will fly to Sydney, Australia in November to participate in the Col Crawford Charity Golf Day for The Spastic Centre.
But the biggest winners were the children from the Fiji Crippled Children's Society, with $103,000 raised during the event.
"We are proud to have been behind Fiji Golf to enable them to hold such a big charity event and give something back to the needy in society," Vodafone Fiji acting Chief Marketing Officer, Pradeep Lal said.
"Vodafone Fiji, through the Vodafone ATH Foundation, helps various charities annually with more than $1 million in grants, but this is the first time the company was behind a charity event in its own right," Lal said.
Vodafone Fiji has also sponsored Fiji golf to the tune of $100,000 for the next 12 months. National Golf Association of Fiji national secretary, Mosese Waqavonovono, thanked Vodafone Fiji for the sponsorship.
"I am over the moon with the money raised. Unlike other agencies which have their headquarters abroad and receive funding from offshore, the Fiji Crippled Children's Society is local and lacks the finances to support its work. We will do an audit and submit the accounts to all business houses that participated," Waqavonovono said.
"This is the first major charity event in the national golf calendar and without Vodafone Fiji's contribution, we wouldn't be able to hold tournament like this.
The National Golf Association has adopted the Fiji Crippled Children Society as its charity beneficiary.
His Excellency, the Vice President of Fiji, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, the chief guest at the awards banquet, had asked guests to consider generously the plight of the children with disabilities, who were cared for under the umbrella of the Fiji Crippled Children Society.
The money raised will be used by the Fiji Crippled Children's Society to fund an initiative to educate local caregivers with training from the Spastic Centre of New South Wales, Australia. The three-year program needs $110,000 per annum to ensure its success.
The NGAF worked closely with the Leadership FIJI 2005 graduates, with huge support from the Cerebral Palsy Institute and The Spastic Centre in NSW, Australia to organise the event.
