Vodafone Fiji customers can now Txt 800 million people

24 June, 2005

Vodafone Fiji customers now have Txt access to 824 million mobile phone subscribers around the world, all for 20 cents a Txt.

This follows Vodafone Fiji's linking up with service provider Mobile 365, effectively increasing the company's Txt footprint from 38 countries and 54 networks to 100 countries and over 200 networks.

Vodafone Fiji's 3G program manager Mayur Narsey says one of the biggest achievements was the inclusion of operators in countries with which Fiji has historically had trade links and where large numbers of former Fiji citizens had relocated.

"In New Zealand up to now, Fiji customers could only send text messages to Vodafone NZ customers," Narsey said. "Now they can send messages to Telecom NZ customers as well."

While most networks in Australia have been accessible previously, the inclusion of the US with its various networks all using different technologies is another major plus.

"Now our customers can txt their relatives in the US for only 20 cents," Narsey said.

Another country joining the network is Iraq. "This will enable family members in Fiji to stay in touch with those who have gone to work in Iraq," said Narsey.

He sees India as another country where access to all major operators will allow traders and family members to Txt as a cheaper option to calling.

Narsey said the new Txt service is also likely to be used extensively and appreciated by tourists from these 100 countries who may visit Fiji each year.

Any Vodafone Fiji customer who uses this service in July gets to win a digital video camera and a return trip to Australia or New Zealand each week. There are four cameras and four overseas trips to be won.

The new service has been available unofficially since the end of last month but will be officially launched next week.

Txting has become a phenomenon worldwide. In Fiji, more than 4.8 million Txt messages were sent in March.
