$1.25 million to Assist with Emergency Communications for Flood Victims

25 January, 2012

Vodafone Fiji has today credited $1.25m dollars worth of free talktime to its customers’ mobiles based in the west from Nadi to Rakiraki affected by flood to assist in emergency communications.

“In times like these communications become a vital element in search and rescue efforts. Families are often cut off from communications with their loved who may have been stranded in other part as they desperately seek information about their whereabouts.  Just hearing from them and being assured of their safety and security means a lot in such times of emergency,”  said Mr Aslam Khan the Managing Director of Vodafone.

“Furthermore, communication is also essential to gather information on the needs of people and organize associated logistics to provide relief assistance as soon as possible.  For this to happen, those affected need to be able to contact DISMAC and relief centres or be contactable to receive assistance”, Khan said.

“Understanding this very real need, Vodafone Fiji has made a decision to top up all its prepaid customers’ mobile numbers from Nadi to Rakiraki with $5 worth of free talk-time today (Wednesday 25th Jan) to provide immediate assistance.

“Besides connecting families, Vodafone is also helping to ensure that Assessment Teams in stricken areas are connected to their respective Team Leaders and Operation Centers so that quick assessment of damaged areas is done.  We have acceded to request from the Nadi DISMAC office enabling free mobile communication amongst their staff to assist with early assessment and reports to fast their respective centers to fast track relief assistance” Khan said.

“It is sad that most of the affected areas are also without water and power supplies.  This has also affected our communication links in some parts of the Western Division.  While restoring FEA power in Nadi and Ba may take some time, Vodafone engineers will also be working round the clock to restore service mobile communications services affected areas as soon as possible.”

“We take this opportunity to convey our sincere sympathies to all the families who have been affected by the devastating floods and hope that members of the community who have not been affected in any way will contribute in the recovery and relief efforts to restore people’s lives”
