Lion's Club Labasa

The Lion's Club of Labasa

The Lion's Club of Labasa has been part of the Lion's Club International's Sight First Project - preventing blindness around the world, for 17 years.  This year (2007), because of the downturn in the economy and a decrease in membership,  the Labasa club was forced to apply for a grant from the Foundation to be able to hold the 9 day project once again; bringing in volunteer optometrists and ophthalmic surgeons from Volunteer Opthalmology Service Overseas (VOSO) New Zealand.

The volunteers offer free screening, eye checks, glasses and surgery and attendance at these clinics are always overwhelming with people coming in from as far away as Nabouwalu; a day's travel away.  This year the Foundation's funding enabled the team of two opthalmologists and five optometrists to see some 1, 200 people over nine days in .  More than 1000 eye glasses were given out for free.  The team also performed 53 cataract and laser surgeries.

At the current treatemt rates the total value of the project is estimated at $300, 000!
