THE KRISHNA JANARDHAN SCHOOL STORY
New Kindergarten for Tailevu Children
Since the Krishna Janardhan Primary School was established in Deepwater, Tailevu in 1953, hundreds of children from the quiet farming community have been through its doors in preparation for the challenges of higher education.
After more than four decades of faithful service part of the school block had deteriorated badly and in 2005 was declared unsafe by Occupational Health and Safety standards.
Despite the serious setback, the School Management embarked on a new challenge of pre-school education after realising the gap in the community.
Using an old teacher’ quarters building as a temporary facility the school started conducting pre-school classes for children from Deepwater and the neighbouring communities of Suvasuva, Matacaucau, Nabila and Korovou in 2005.
In 2006, School Headmistress, Ms Bindra Devi sought assistance from the Vodafone ATH Foundation for the demolition of the old building and construction of a new kindergarten block.
On Friday, July 13th the School Management formally received the new school block which had been built with a grant of $8000 from the Foundation.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, an emotional Ms Devi said the school was expecting more enrolments in the New Year, thanks to the new school block.
“Today, we are all here to witness, acknowledge and appreciate the commitment and dedication that Vodafone ATH Foundation has shown. With the help of the Foundation, 8 of our children will benefit immediately by having classes in the new pre-school block. Next year we are expecting more enrolments in the pre-school.”
In officially handing over the building, Foundation Board Member, Mrs Manorama Singh said pre-school education was a significant step in the life of any child and the Foundation was pleased to be able to assist children in the Tailevu community through the new building.
Other Kindergarten projects funded by the Foundation are those at Tamavua Village, Suva and Namarai, Ra.
