Chevalier Farm Training School, Wainadoi
A few kilometers outside Suva is Waindadoi, and the Chevalier Farm Training Center. Run by the Catholic Church, the Center is home to young men who, eager to get another chance at life are learning trade skills including mechanical engineering, carpentry and farming.
With a successful chicken run already supplying eggs to regular customers in offices in Suva and teaching the young men entrepreneurial skills, revitalizing the Center’s old duck farm became a priority.
With a grant from the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation, the Center has been able to provide its students with another lucrative learning opportunity breeding and selling meat birds.
In the following pictures, the old run-down duck enclosure, built over a pond to discourage hungry dogs and mongooses, has been demolished and the Center’s students build the new pen before filling up the pond and putting some ducks into their new (although temporary) home.
The handover is expected to take place in March, 2007.
