Tips on How to Minimize Data Roaming Usage
There are several ways to reduce data usage while on roaming which include but are not limited to the following.
1. Viewing or Reading of emails
- Do not open emails if you do not think it is important. Scrolling through the list of emails will not chew data. A small amount of Data is used when the email is initially received however a larger amount of data is used once the email has been opened.
- Do check the size of attachment at the bottom of the email before opening it and only open if you wish to view the document.
- You may also limit the amount of data downloaded once the email has been opened in increments of 32kbs at a time. You may configure this option by opening up Messages and select Menu button > General Options and under “Auto More”, ensure NO is selected.
How does this affect viewing of emails?
Well once an email is opened, the Blackberry will download the first 32kbs of data. If you wish to view more then you will be required to Select Menu > More to view the next 32kbs and so forth or More All to view the entire email.
2. Data applications on BlackBerry
- It is best to close all Data applications such as chats, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Skype, Viigo, etc) and only allow emails to come through.
- It is also advisable to disable auto-refresh or auto updates on Blackberry data applications especially when not in use.
3. Use of Blackberry Browser
- If you do need to use the Browser, do make sure that you exit from the browser to make sure it is properly closed. This may be done by selecting the Escape key (on right of the trackball) and selecting Yes when asked, “Do you want to close the Browser?”
- You may also change the settings under Browser Configuration to reduce the data coming through once a page has been requested.
This may be done by:
Opening the Browser, Select Menu Button (on left of Trackball) > Options > Browser Configuration. You may disable/uncheck selections such as Use BackGround Images, Support Embedded Media, Etc in order to reduce the richness of the browser page you are viewing.
4. Turn Data Roaming Off

6. Spam Filters
You may also get your IT Department to set spam filters that will limit the file size limit and types of email you receive on the email server or gets forwarded to the Blackberry. However, this will depend on the type of server and filter system you currently have.
Note: Please also be advised that that in order for any of the above changes to be effective ensure that you save the changes you have made.
